Training & Education Targeted for Working in
Garden Centers, Nurseries, Greenhouses, and Landscapers
Previous programs consisted of 5 lecture/discussion sessions held at the
University of Connecticut Hartford campus and 4 hands-on sessions to be held at
Green Industry businesses in the Greater Hartford area. Classes are held each
Thursday from 7 to 9 pm and each Saturday from 10 am until 12 pm. Program dates are January 22 to February 21. Previous year’s programs focused on information and skills needed by garden center and nursery
staff.
Topics to be covered in the program include basic botany, plant identification
and taxonomy, soils and fertilizers, greenhouse integrated pest management,
planting/seeding/transplanting, watering plants, pests, plant diseases, and
weeds, retail customer service, turf, and landscaper equipment. At the end of each session, participants will receive 5 take home questions to
answer and return at the next class. Completion of these questions is required
for participants to receive their certification.
The cost of the CT Green Prep program is $100 per person plus there is a $20 per
car parking fee. There will be limited scholarships ($50 each-half tuition) available (see
scholarship page).
After completion of the course, participants will be put in contact with
potential Green Industry employers.
